Seems always need to do the controller setup dance, whenever a game doesn't fully support it by design. Really wish I found more about this in an FAQ. If it's not and steam overlay isn't working either, you most likely need to close out steam and re-launch as admin. You will know if Steam Input is being detected by DE if you see your game config profile popup/loadup during logo in the bottom screen. Try unplugging wireless dongles/steering wheels etc. Some players have reported that other peripherals can prevent the gamepad from being picked up.Alternatively you can take a look at some of the community provided templates or even configure your own if the controls feel wonky in-game. Double check that your Imported template is Gamepad and not Keyboard+Mouse for Gamepad. Under Properties > Controller Configurations (can also be accessed in Big Picture).Ensure that under the steam library when selecting DE > Controller Configurations you are enforcing Steam Input (especially important for non XBox / PS4 controllers, like Stadia or Amazon Luna controllers). This is especially important if you are forcing DE to run as admin only (e.g. Launch steam as admin before launching DE within steam (either normal or through big picture). The later is obvious if you can press A to skip the logo cut scene, but can't control within the main menu. By default DE seems to have a wrong config setup even if it autodetects the gamepad (Keyboard+Mouse) and not the correct template (Gamepad). Doing so however prevents steam from enforcing Steam Input. I noticed that many players were having loading issues or menu crashes and the common workaround is to launch DE as an admin. If like me you are struggling to get controller support working, here is a fix that may work.
